What is Kratom?

Still some countries have banned the use of Kratom powder, due to several factors, mostly the lack of extensive studies. A valid concern, to be sure. However, proponents of Kratom maintain that it’s really Big Pharma who have successfully lobbied governments to ban the plant and even the testing of the plant. Why would Big Pharma want to ban a plant that users find so helpful? Well, it’s a plant, not a lab-produced chemical compound, and therefore, they can’t patent it and claim sole rights to it and all the profits from it.
And that certainly seems to play a role in the US, where the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) attempted to classify Kratom powder as a controlled substance. Citing the lack of testing and individual cases of contamination, Big Pharma worked with the FDA to ban Kratom entirely. However, a major outcry from the approximately 5 million users in the US got the attention of Congress, and members on both sides of the aisle banded together to condemn the proposed FDA ban. As a result, today Kratom remains categorized as a food. And it remains unregulated at the federal level in the USA… at least for the moment. However, several states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin, ban Kratom, as well as individual counties in other states.

As noted above, at least part of the documented reasons the FDA proposed to ban all Kratom products had to do with purity of the products…. Specifically, a number of cases of impurities, including salmonella, were associated with some of the products being marketed. So, obviously, your choice of supplier is important.
