What is Churros Recipe became one of the most popular Internet searches during the 2020 pandemic. Why? Well, because they’re delicious, duh! And they’re unique. And they’re not something most of us have ever made. They’re a delicacy that most in the United States and Europe have only found in restaurants and at carnivals and fairs. So, What Exactly IS a Churro … And What Is Churros Recipe?

Many describe a Churro as an Hispanic Donut But while the taste is similar to SOME doughnuts (the non-cake-form doughnuts), the shape, versatility and texture are entirely different. Like doughnuts, they are a form of deep fried dough. But, their soft center combined with their crunchy exterior contributes to both their distinct flavor, as well as to their versatility. Both of which I think are considerable improvements over doughnuts.

They’re made using a pastry bag with a star-shaped tip, so they’re more like a cheese straw in shape. Then, they’re sprinkled with various spices, the most common dessert form being cinnamon and sugar. They’re also often hollow in the center, leaving room to pipe in your favorite creamy delight: Bavarian Cream, Nutella, Dulce de Leche or whatever else you like.

So unlike doughnuts, they’re extremely adaptable to serve as a finger food… And less messy, too. You can dip them or eat them plain. A plate piled high with churros, with various accompanying dips, like chocolate, dulce de leche, fruit spreads, honey, etc. is a fantastic and unique addition to any meal, buffet or celebration. And, like doughnuts, they’re also great for breakfast, dipped in tea, coffee or hot chocolate… only easier to dip!

Origins of the Churro

The origin of the Churro is a bit contested, with three countries taking credit. It’s not surprising that multiple countries want to take credit for this delicious treat. They are, after all, quite delicious. The Spanish say Churros were invented by shepherds who didn’t have access to ovens, due to their nomadic lifestyle. Lending credence to this claim of origin is the fact that many Spanish shepherds tended the Churra sheep… And Churros themselves are shaped quite a bit like the horns of this sheep.

Another version of history holds that Portuguese sailors brought back a similar pastry from Northern China and adapted it to what we know today as a Churro. Regardless of origin though, it’s widely accepted that Churros were introduced to South America by the Conquistadors, and eventually spread from there to Central and North America.

And while Churros are mainly found in restaurants and at carnivals and fairs in the United States, homemade Churros are quite common across all of Latin America. Lucky them!

How to Make Churros – What is Churros Recipe?

There are many, many recipes available online for Churros. Some are simply flour and water (some insist this is the ONLY way to make churros). Others contain eggs, butter, sugar, and/or milk. But all require a pastry bag and a star tip to make properly. And if you want filled churros, you need a special tip to create a hollow center.

You place all mixed ingredients into a pastry bag and pipe them to your desired length directly into hot oil and cook to your desired crispness. Some like Mini Churros that are only a couple of inches long. Others prefer the long, curved, sheep horn shaped Churros. Still others prefer them 4 to 6 inches long and straight. (I must say that the straight ones are much easier to fill, if you like filling.)

However, getting the perfect balance of ingredients to achieve not only the perfect flavor… But also that perfect texture to pipe into the hot oil, can be a challenge, and takes practice. If you’ve ever tried to make Churros, you know what I’m talking about. If the dough isn’t ‘just right,’ your churros come out flattened, so all your work in piping was for naught. Or they may look beautiful in the fryer, but collapse into a messy heap once you put them on a plate.

Since the shape and ridges of the Churro are what hold on to the sprinkled topping, the flavor will definitely be altered if your Churros go flat. So, what to do? Enter San Diablo Churros.
