Whether these changes we put our hair through come from personality changes, lifestyle changes, cultural awareness. or whatever, sometimes we go to extremes to make these changes. And we subject our hair to harsh chemicals and processes that damage our hair. Plainly put, we often become the victim of our own well-intentioned, but bad decisions.

Hair Types? How Many Can There Be? – Best Curly Hair Products
Yes, there are defined hair types… And even defined subtypes. So, just like skin types, blood types and body types, there are also hair types. And, again, just to be perfectly clear, your ethnicity does not always determine exactly which hair type you have. It’s about your genetics. All the members of your family tree pass down their genes to you. There are so many genes, but which ones you get from your family tree is random. If you have siblings, you’ll notice that even though you share the same family tree, you do not share all the same characteristics. You each get a a different combination of your ancestors’ genes… (unless you’re identical twins, that is). So, your eye color may come from your father, while your hair type may come from your great-great-grandmother on your mother’s father’s mother’s side.
This hair type chart can help you determine which hair type… and just as importantly, which hair sub-type… you have. Armed with that information, you’ll be better prepared to care for your natural hair.
Hair Type 1 – A, B and C
I am just about as White as a person can be. My DNA test shows 5 ancestral make-ups: White, really white, super white and Caspar… with only a 1% African heritage. As you would expect (but is not always the case), I’m fair skinned, with long, straight, naturally blonde hair. I’m a Type 1A all the way. I would really have appreciated getting more of that African and Native American DNA that my sisters got, in both my skin tone and my hair type. Again, we all wish for what we don’t have, right?
- Type 1A hair is the straightest of straight hair. There’s no bend, no bounce and no wave. I can tell you from years of personal experience that it’s difficult… sometimes impossible… to add texture. Like many, I’ve resorted to harsh chemical perms to get a bit of curl on several occasions.
- Type 1B hair is also straight, but has a just a touch of a wave to it. Not much, certainly… but some subtle curves and even a little bounce in the wave. This hair type is a bit easier to curl… without the need for harsh chemicals. Those with this hair type often use styling tools such as hot rollers and curling irons/rods to add curls, body and bounce.
- Then, there’s Type 1c hair is a bit of a combination of straight hair with just a few long, loose curls. This Hair Type 1C can be more affected by weather conditions and humidity than the A and B sub-types..
Type 2 Hair: A, B and C
Wavy is the easiest way to describe Hair Type 2. But the type and texture of wave you have will vary with each sub-type. Some of my siblings fall into this category. To that end, use the scale below to determine exactly which hair sub-type you have.
- Type 2A hair has straight hair at the crown, with loose waves starting to form near the middle of the head. This hair tends to be of a more fine texture.
- Type 2B hair is also straight at the crown, with waves starting in the middle of the head. The waves, however, are more defined and form an S shape as they descend to the hair tip. These waves are usually a bit more coarse in texture and may have a tendency to frizz.
- Type 2c hair features waves from crown to tip. And the waves are closer to curls or ringlets. The hair texture ranges from medium to coarse and is very prone to frizzing.
Hair Type 3 – A, B, and C
My children have far more variety in their DNA make up than I do. When it comes to hair, one is Type 3A. He has really dark, shiny, smooth, and voluminous hair…accented with big, soft, beautiful, and bouncy curls… which he hates and cuts off as often as he can… Resorting to cutting it himself, if I don’t get him to the ‘hair cut store’ fast enough. He has exactly the hair I want but hates it… And he says the same about me.
- Type 3A curls are big, soft, loose spirals. These curls also tend to be shiny and springy and have a well-defined S-shape.
- Type 3B curls are a bit tighter., with curls ranging from ringlets to corkscrews. This hair type has more density and volume and can lean toward the coarse side.
- Type 3C curls are the curly-coily type of curls. They feature an extremely tight, corkscrew shape. When wet, it will be long and beautifully coily, but really shows the shrinkage when it dries. This is because of the tightness of the coils. The result, you hair will appear more dense with greater volume.
Type 4 Hair – Best Curly Hair Products for Natural Hair
If you have a more ethnic DNA make-up, you may… but won’t necessarily… fall in this hair type. Remember, it’s all in your genetics! For many reasons, many in this hair type tend to use chemicals in an attempt to tame and manage their frizzy kinks, curls and coils. - Type 4B hair is the most unique, because the curls have a distinct Z-shaped pattern, with crisp angles. Like its cousin, Type 4B hair can vary from fine to wiry, but the curl is tighter and less defined shape than type 4A.
- Type 4C hair is very thick, dense, and coarse, with little curl definition. This hair type curl can also vary from super fine to wiry and coarse. But, the curls are much more delicate and are easily lost with brushing, combing or picking. And it has a frustrating habit of frizzing badly.
My younger son has Type 4C hair. It grows dense and in tiny, tight, coils that are super soft… And super tangly. When wet, his the coils hang long and beautiful down to his shoulders, but shrink significantly when dry. And when he attempts to de-tangle his hair, the curls mostly disappear. Luckily, he LOVES his hair. (Unusual, right?) He thinks of his hair as his signature… The crown of his ‘look,’ literally and figuratively. He could totally rock a huge 70s-style Afro, and is working towards that goal. OK, he may or may not have an adult cousin who offered to pay him $20 if he grew his hair out big enough to hide a sandwich in. Gross, but LOL. The point is, he wants to work with his natural hair, not against it. Kudos to him!!!
Problem: Mom doesn’t know how to care for Hair Type 4. I’ve read up on it and asked friends and hair stylists who are more familiar with his hair type than I am. And I’ve tried every product and method they’ve recommended. I’ve learned a lot, and we’re getting there. But I still feel like we’re missing something.
